I was sitting in the bank yesterday, for much longer than a person should have to sit in the bank. While there I was forced out of utter boredom to read the "Utah Business" magazine. The cover story is called, "Forty under 40" in which they talk about 40 successful Utah people that are under the age of forty. So, still waiting and still bored I thumbed through it. It is a little depressing to look at this spread of people basically the same age as me that are super successful, while I am...... well..... not as much. But the BIG thing I noticed was how old every single person looked. If I didn't know their ages, because they have them directly under their pictures I would never have guessed they were under 40. It is too bad they don't have their pictures in the online version. Every time I would turn the page I would say to myself, 'no way is that guy 37, and that girl must be 45.' When I got to the end of the article I went back and went through them again, this time thinking, 'do I look that old?' Cause I sure don't think I look that old. I definitely see some aging on my face, and my hair gets thinner and thinner, but I just can't believe that I look like those people. Maybe they just look older because they have REAL jobs, and are important, and big bosses and stuff. Maybe that much authority makes you old.
I suppose it is possible that I just look really young for my age. Sometimes I get comments, from old ladies, real old ladies, you know, gray hairs, that I couldn't possibly be old enough to have an 11 year old child. For some reason that makes me a bit defensive, cause I don't really want these grandmas thinking I was some teenage unwed mother or something. I was 24 when I had her, this is perfectly acceptable age to have a child!
I AM A GROWNUP, you hear?
So my daughter told me that I am crazy.
I don't want to look young, and I don't want to look old.
Probably she is right.
But, I think if my alternative to looking too young is to look like those stuffy old people, I'll stick with looking young.
I think when the old ladies say, "You look way to young to have 2 children." I will just say, I know, I was young and foolish." And let them believe what they want.
