The tap class, the scholarship and all that

Monday, January 19, 2009
I should tell you the rest of the story.

There were other options to the tap class, but none of them were really working out.
I sent a request to the scholarship committee begging them to make an allowance and allow me to only take 11 credits. But they never got back to me.
I went to a "Natural Hazards" class that I have to take sometime, but I just couldn't bear the thought of adding another class that would actually require something of me.
I tried to get an internship real quick, but it seems to take more time than that.
I didn't officially add the tap class because I wanted to wait and see if the scholarship committee was going to get back to me, But I started going to class anyway.

This wasn't exactly a beginners class, but I wasn't worried. It was called Tap Techniques I. I have been tapping my whole life, right? I am not exactly a beginner. Well excluding the last ten years that is. Ten years since I have so much as shuffled, and I am not really sure where my tap shoes are, and I missed the first two days of class, but no problem.

Ten years is actually a long time.

It was like those dreams where you are in the school play and you can't remember your lines. Even though I was wearing soft soled shoes I was sure everyone could hear my lack of clarity in my "shuffle stamp" and my "draw backs" and every other step that everyone did perfectly without any instruction. She split us into groups of three so everyone could watch us perform the "simple" routine she taught us. I came very close to sneaking out of the room before my turn. I am sure no one would have noticed.

After class I went to the computer lab and found a very nice letter from the scholarship committee.
(Can you tell I take my cues on the meaning of "nice" and "mean" from Taio. If someone is being nice it means they are doing what I tell them to do and telling me what I want to hear.)

This is what it said:

We understand that it is hard for you, so we guess you can have your scholarship and you don't have to go to that dumb tap class anymore.

or something like that.

I hope the teacher doesn't feel too bad that I just never came back.

No tapping? Oh I was hoping you would be a star and teach all the little cousins tap after you retire from full time student....oh there goes all the dreams of tappers...
NO really I'm glad they gave your your scholarship anyway, whew! I guess you will have more time for more important things...like studying and spending time with your new husband and the kids or taking up a new hobby...

Holy Cow. I seriously can't believe they let you drop the class. I was not under the impression that they bent rules. Ever. I am quite speechless. And I almost feel like I should have warned you about the tap class. I took a beginning tap class and it seemed that by the end of the 1st day we were already up to my level, whatever that was.

I also took an intermediate ballroom dance class once and I actually did walk out about 5 minutes into the first class when i saw how good they were.

Hooray! I'm glad it all worked out for you in the end. It was all really DUMB. I'm sure you have better ways to spend your time!

I discovered that learning to clog ruined all my tap technique. I would never dare take a tap class now. I am glad you don't have to do it
